The Globe of Crates
of Mallus (3rd century B.C.)

It was a world sphere made of clay, constructed by Crates of Mallus and exhibited in Pergamon in ca 150 B.C. It was divided into five parallel zones (two frigid, two temperate and one torrid) and four continents. The frigid zones and the Equator were unfavorable to the development of human life. “Oecumene” (the known parts of Asia, Africa and Europe) and “Perioeci” (corresponding to North America) were in the north temperate zone, whereas “Antipodes” and “Antioeci” were in the south temperate zone. The seasons in the northern hemisphere were opposite to those in the southern.
